How will you slow down this week?

Last Saturday was one of my favorite days.

Between Neal’s travel schedule and my crazy holiday season workload, finding time for just the two of us has been a pretty tricky task these days. (I know all the young moms out there are rolling your eyes at me and saying, “just you wait”…)

But truthfully, it seems like the past couple of months have been extra stressful, so when a Saturday magically rolled around where we discovered we had zero plans, we jumped for joy. FINALLY a chance to have a whole day with no schedule, just the two of us.

Neal got up and went to the gym, I did a little bit of work (I try not to work on the weekends, but, we had to get the Winter Guide done somehow!) and then we got dressed and rode our bikes to the cutest little coffee shop in Humboldt Park (a nearby neighborhood, for those of you non-Chicagoans) I discovered a couple weeks back. It’s called CC Ferns–they’re a coffee shop that also sells cigars (a big plus for Neal). It’s decorated so thoughtfully that it makes you nostalgic for an earlier era–vintage furniture, these incredible wood-paneled walls, and old-school travel posters with brass picture lights atop.

They also have boozy coffees (they call them “boozy steamers)–so we ordered a couple (I got the Cuban–which is a layered shot of espresso with rum, cream and this incredible caramel).

Then, get this.

We sat there, and read things that WEREN’T on a screen. (The newspaper? How about that!) For like, two hours.

We talked about current events, shared opinions, and were totally in the present moment. It was so refreshing, relaxing, and renewing.

So, my challenge to you, make a point to carve some time out of your schedule this week (either with yourself, or your significant other) and just BE. Put your phone away. Really take in how delicious your coffee is, really read and comprehend something that isn’t on your phone.
