A New Twist on an Old Classic

Nov 22, 2016

Casual Winter Street Style–Chicago Fashion Blogger, The Golden Girl

OUTFIT: Red Sweater: VERY old, but similar here, here, here (only $55!) and here (total steal at $39!) // Ballet Flats: Repetto, bought in Paris, but very similar versions here (patent red) and here (non patent red). They also come in EVERY color and are so, so comfortable! I want a pair in light pink, and also like the one’s with the midi heels. Jeans: Levi’s (similar styles here, and here!) // Scarf: Old, but similar here, here, and here. (We also have a whole plaid scarf page in our Winter Guide!) // BEAUTY: MAC lip primer + lipstick in “Diva,” Estee Lauder eyebrow pencil (LOVE that thing!) and blush,  Dior Mascara, Bareminerals Complexion Rescue + Mineral makeup foundation, hair curled with a Beachwaver curling iron & Oribe dry texture spray

Want to know what’s really fun?

Discovering an old staple in the back of your closet, and finding something different to wear it with that makes it feel brand new again.

That’s what happened with this red sweater! (Mine is old, but similar version here). It’s been my go-to for countless holiday parties, Christmas mornings, Christmas Eves–you name it. Plus, it’s the prettiest shade of punchy read, so it obviously works great for non-holiday occasions too!

Speaking of holiday go-tos, having great festively colored staples is great to fall back on, but sometimes they can leave your outfit feeling old and stale. Like, “I’m wearing this, but I don’t LOVE wearing this” kind of attitude, you know? Sometimes all it takes is a little remixing! I made a few simple swaps and made this feel like a completely brand new outfit.

First, instead of wearing it with the typical boots, I went for a red on red look by choosing ballet flats instead. Sounds simple, but results in a whole different look altogether!

If you followed along on my Paris posts, you’ll know that I got these adorable little red ballet flats while we were on our trip there. They are seriously the BEST flats I’ve ever worn–so comfortable and feel like you’re pretty much barefoot.

Repetto is the brand who makes them, which apparently is THE place to get flats if you’re a French girl. They actually make REAL ballet shoes (like for real ballerinas! How cool is that?)

I get so much joy every time I put them on, remembering what an incredible trip we had. I think classic items of clothing and accessories are some of the best souvenirs you can buy. They allow you to re-live your trip for years to come each time you wear them! (Same goes with my leather jacket my mom bought me as a gift when she came to visit me while studying abroad in Italy!)

Okay…back to the “easy wardrobe swaps” conversation. Another one I made: instead of my dark skinnies, I pulled some classic mom-style jeans (side note, I’m pretty sure my mom had this EXACT pair of jeans when I was growing up, I remember them so vividly! Mom jeans in the most literal sense.)

My trick for making boxy sweaters flattering: style them with high-waisted jeans. Go for a half-tuck or side-tuck, which defines your waist and makes you feel more feminine and less like a shoebox ;-P (Who wants to feel like a shoebox?!)

The final touch? A classic plaid scarf (which also had red in it) and swipe of deep, dark red lipstick. (Red is clearly the underlying theme here, have you noticed?) Sometimes the matchy-matchy thing is the best.

“How easy is that?” (I’m basically the Barefoot Contessa of outfit remixing. Not really.)
