I can’t believe time has flown so fast, it feels like we just booked the tickets yesterday! I cannot wait– but man, has it been a CRAZY few days trying to get ready for vacation! 

How to wear a midi skirt:

I’m excited for today’s blog post, because several of you have told me you want to see more fall skirts on the blog but that sometimes it’s tricky to figure out how to wear them–– that’s where I come in! Today, we’re going to dive into JUST that– how to wear a midi skirt with a chunky sweater, and how to make the look work for you!

First thing’s first, the star of the show… 

The midi skirt:

This skirt is made by Halogen, which is one of my favorite Nordstrom made brands. They make such classic pieces that are super versatile and easy to wear for so many occasions. (Sizing: I’m wearing XS and think it runs true to size!) 

I love this skirt in particular because it’s one of those fall essentials that can transition seamlessly from “date night” to “workday” with just a swap of accessories. The look you see here could totally be work appropriate, but is also perfect for dinner as well! I think the silhouette of this skirt is particularly lovely and flattering! 

The sweater:

Speaking of classic staples, it doesn’t get more classic than a chunky knit off-white sweater from Topshop. I love that this one has a fisherman-esque vibe but is a little bit chicer. I will definitely be wearing this with jeans a lot this fall and winter as well! Sizing: Runs true to size, I’m wearing a small. 

The booties: 

I LOVE these Steve Madden booties. They are great to wear with longer skirts in particular because the almond toe really elongates the leg and I think where it hits the ankle is a really flattering height. (Not too short, not too high!) B.P. also makes an identical pair for less, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly version!

Styling tips for midi skirts: 

Overall style rule of thumb:

You should always strive for a balance of “sweet” and “spicy.” Just like food! Sweet= things that can be more conservative, more feminine, more girly, and spicy being things like heels, something form-fitting or edgy, showing a bit of skin. If you have too much sweet, your look can be boring and frumpy. If you have too much spice, your look might draw attention in a way that makes anyone over the age of 19 cringe–if you catch my drift. ? This works with EVERYTHING, but especially as it pertains to midi skirts, because midi skirts are A LOT of sweet–therefore, you need some spice to balance them out! 

Tip #1: Consider the cut: 

Midi skirts can be a lot of fabric–which means they can sometimes feel “frumpy” or “dowdy.” If you’re worried about too much fabric, a midi skirt like the one I’m wearing here can be a good choice, whereas, a pleated midi skirt may add too much bulk to certain body types. On the flip side, a pleated midi skirt can be a fantastic choice because it moves beautifully and has more of an A-line shape, that can create more of an hourglass figure if that’s what you’re going for. Overall, I think the more fabric there is to a skirt, the more “sweet” it is, therefore, you need more “spice” to balance it. 

Tip #2: When in doubt, choose a heel: 

Because, again, the length of a midi skirt can sometimes lend itself to feeling frumpy, I think the best rule of thumb is to always gravitate toward pairing it with a heel, particularly one with a pointed toe because this elongates your legs. (Thats’ why these booties are so great!)

On the flip side, flats with a rounded toe can easily make your legs look cut off. To tie this back to our lesson–guess what the heel is? SPICE! Guess what ballet flats are? SWEET. You don’t want sweet and sweet. You want sweet and spice–yes? 

Tip #3: Play with proportions: 

Additionally, remember, what you’re wearing on the top of your midi skirt needs to compensate for how long the skirt is. For example–the skirt I’m wearing is long and straight. The sleeves of this sweater are also long and straight. It basically just looks like I’m wearing rectangles. This look is too much sweet and not enough spice. BUT, by simply rolling the sleeves of my sweater, it shows a bit more skin (i.e. SPICE) and changes the proportions to look to take it from frumpy to intentional and chic. Showing just a bit more skin=adding a hint of spice.
