Happy Tuesday, guys!

It feels really good to be getting back into the swing of things post Italy trip. I had the best birthday yesterday, thanks so much for your birthday wishes! I went to one of my favorite coffee shops, CC Ferns, and knocked out a couple blog posts (I know, working on my birthday, but it was so nice to get back to work–I didn’t really want to do anything else ?) Don’t worry, I only did the fun work. I left the boring stuff like going through my inbox to start on today ?

Anyway, I shot this outfit before we left and as you know, despite my best efforts, I didn’t get my life together enough to schedule two weeks of content to go up while I was gone, so I just took two weeks off. (Thank you for understanding!) Regardless, I wanted to post this cute outfit before everything sold out!

Jean shorts are one of my favorite wardrobe staples, but I think sometimes they can feel a little too young, too casual, or too edgy to make them work for certain occasions. The good news is that you can class up jean shorts pretty easily, and today’s post has some tips on how to do just that!

How to make cutoff jean shorts look classy:

Choose the right pair

First thing’s first–it’s easy to lump all jean shorts into the same category, but there are SO many different cuts, washes, and styles of jean shorts. If you feel like they haven’t been the right fit for you in the past, don’t give up! They’re a wardrobe staple that every girl should have! I find that my favorite kind is a high-waisted, not crazily distressed, raw-hem pair that is a minimum of 3″ in the inseam. The pair I’m wearing here is from Topshop–but I have also heard SO many good things about the AGOLDE Parker shorts. They are a cult classic. I also want to try this pair as well–I’ll keep you posted!

You can also go with a pair that is cuffed on the bottom if you don’t prefer a raw-hem–those would be even more classic! I have this pair from Abercrombie that I really love (and only $39 right now!!) They have a lot of stretch, are super flattering, and I actually removed the small seam that tacks up the sides so I can either roll them up or roll them down for the raw hem–I love the length this way!

Add in feminine elements

I love getting dressed with the “juxtaposition rule”–as I like to call it–in mind. It’s essentially just the idea of mixing two different styles together for the perfect juxtaposition. In this example we have jean shorts, that are a little bit casual-edge, right? To make the outfit more interesting or to dress it up, pair it with something that is completely the opposite–something really feminine and sweet–like a top with bows!

I’m not one to jump on a lot of trend bandwagons, but I love the smocked trend that’s happening right now–I think smocked tops are so fun and summery and are a perfect match for high-waisted shorts and skirts!

Keep everything else classic

As you know, my style tends to be fairly polished, so when I wear something like jean shorts that are more casual with edgier elements like a raw hem, I like to keep everything else classic and feminine!

Go with polished flat sandals

I absolutely love these polished, Grecian-inspired flats. They are so incredibly chic and comfortable–I own them in two colors and wore them all over Italy with no blisters. Since they’re slides, they’re also great for the pool and are so much classier than rubber flip flops! They run true to size!

Shop all colors (they come in heels, too!)
