How to Holiday-Party Proof Your Home

Dec 23, 2015

IMG_0077

If you’re like me, the idea of entertaining during the holidays brings you so much joy, yet at the same time, complete panic. The possibility of coffee spills, red wine stains and muddy footprints on the rug are enough to send you (we’re talking about you, right? Wink wink) into overdrive.

The minute our (very first adult piece of furniture) light colored grey couch was delivered–Neal looked at me and said, “Do people still Scotchgard couches? How the heck are we going to keep this thing clean?!”

I laughed and thought nothing of it, and mentally bit my fingernails every time I sat on my couch with a cup of black coffee.

A few months later, Scotchgard Brand reached out to me and asked if I wanted to pair up for a partnership, and I was all, “well…that’s so funny, because we REALLY need help with my whole, you know, not ruining the couch situation.”

And they were like “yeah, we can help you with that.”

So, together, we set out to protect my very lightly colored couch, and also equally lightly colored jute rug.

How does it work exactly?

Scotchgard Brand gives fabric repellency to push stains away from fabric fibers. Stains also release easier with washing, or dry cleaning than they would alone. Think of it as an invisible protective layer. (And no worries, I know what you’re thinking, and no, it does not change the texture of the fabric at all!)

Now, post-application, have I been brave enough to pour red wine on my couch to make sure it remains untouched? OBVIOUSLY not.

However, I have seen it in action with water and it’s reminiscent of a middle school science class. Instead of sinking into the fibers immediately, the liquid beads up, and actually runs off the fabric. Think of it similar to the way the rain beads up on your rain jacket. I was totally geeking out.

How to apply it?

All you need is a can of Scotchgard Fabric & Upholstery Protector. First, test for colorfastness in a hidden area. Spray in a hidden area until wet and then wipe vigorously with a white absorbent cloth. If color comes off, it’s best not to use. Once you’ve passed the test (and almost everything does!), just spray in a sweeping motion, about 6 inches away from fabric surface.  Be careful not to oversaturate, as two thinner coats are better than one thick coat! Then, let it dry completely overnight!

My tip: Stock up on a couple cans (one can covers about one average sized sofa) and apply it to every fabric surface in your house right before you leave for the day, or better yet, on a weekend trip. That way you aren’t tempted to sit on the items before they’re dry!

What other things can you use this on? Pretty much anything in your home made of fabric! Area rugs, decorative bathroom towels, table runners, placemats, pillows, drapes, even carpet! (I’m also planning to apply it to my camel colored coat, and new white canvas tote.)

So, there you have it, I can now say a small part of my soul no longer dies when a dinner guest makes an accidental spill on my couch. My wish for you this holiday season is that you can say the same 😉
