How to Accessorize a Sweater For Fall— 15 Ways!

Oct 8, 2019

Plaid Blanket Scarf + Red Sweater, Chicago Street Style Blogger Jess Keys

It’s officially FALL and you know what that means…SWEATER WEATHER!  It’s that perfect (and fleeting–always–in Chicago) time of year where it’s brisk enough to pull out a sweater and not too cold that you have to hide it under a million layers. (Have you seen the sweater weathaaa! SNL skit? ?)

So grab your turtlenecks, mock necks, v-necks, crewnecks, cable knits and more–because I’m rounding up 15 different ways to accessorize and style your sweaters this fall–with scarves, OTK boots, blazers, double layering, and more!

How to accessorize a sweater:

First off–what are some go-to ways to accessorize a sweater? It’s so easy to fall into the old “sweater and jeans” rut, so here are some good thought starters. Of course–there are the obvious ones–a scarf, hat, earrings, etc–those all make sense, but some of my best sweater “accessories” are actually not accessories but more “tried and true pairings”–like your favorite Italian red you buy whenever you cook spaghetti! So, this post will help you to look at things in a new light and help you find “accessories” in your closet you never considered before!

Best accessories to wear with sweaters:

First–a scarf!

No surprise there, right? We’ll get more into scarves in a second, but I rarely leave the house in the fall or winter without some kind of scarf. It really goes a long way in pulling your look together–so if you find that your outfits are often lacking that “something special”–I recommend investing in a few scarves! More scarf inspiration below!

It might sound weird to consider “layers” as an accessory–but they are! Layering two sweaters together, for example, or your favorite button-down underneath a crewneck sweater. Maybe it’s layering a slinky lace camisole underneath a chunky cardigan. These “layers” are basically just another way to accessorize, completely transforming your look while keeping you cozy at the same time!

Red Lipstick:

A great red lipstick is arguably the BEST accessory you can buy. Red lipstick makes even a wrinkled white tee and bedhead look intentional and “perfectly undone.” Some of my favorites are Girls Night and “BC Red” by Beautycounter, and Givenchy’s Carmen Escarpin

15 sweater outfits with accessories:

With OTK boots + Mini Skirt

How to Accessorize a Sweater

Cashmere Sweater: Old (but adore this similar Everlane Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater that comes in 9 colors! Run TTS, Skirt: BlankNYC (TTS), Scarf: Lord + Taylor (50% off right now!) OTK Boots: Blondo (limited quantities at Lord + Taylor, but I found them fully stocked here!) Also, Nordstrom carries their newest OTK style (which seems identical to last year’s?) They run TTS!

Perfect for early fall days and also for going out at night, I love pairing sweaters with mini skirts and OTK boots! It’s a great way to stay cozy And between all three pieces, the texture combinations are endless! Add a light scarf for a pop of pattern– or not, it looks great either way!

How to Accessorize a Sweater this fall

Sweater: Evereve (On sale for less than $30!) I also love this Madewell Pom Pom Cardigan Sweater, Coated Denim Skirt: BlankNYC (also available at Nordstrom — and on sale for 30% off! Runs TTS), OTK Boots: Stuart Weitzman Lowland Boot (This Blondo pair is a great budget-friendly alternative!) both TTS.

Add a fall vest:

sweater weather

Vest: Barbour, Sweater: Topshop, Denim: Everlane (Run TTS–I wear 25), Chelsea Boot: Old (Love this similar pair from Everlane!), Sunglasses: Ray-Ban

Just like miniskirts, vests are great layering pieces to take advantage of before the winter cold rolls in! This is such a classic look that’s perfect for fall activities like apple orchards, pumpkin patches and football games.

Under a Blazer

How to Accessorize a Sweater and style ideas

Blazer: Old, very similar here and more formfitting version here  Sweater: Old from Everlane, but their Cashmere Crew (comes in 18 colors!) and Cashmere Shrunken Mockneck are very similar, Pants: Old from Halogen, this Spanxx version and Lyssé pair (ON SALE!) are similar, Pumps: Sam Edelman, Scarf: Old, similar here!

The easiest way to style a light sweater for the office? Add a blazer! I love this look for meetings and presentations when there’s a cold snap in the air — it’s beyond comfortable and such a power look! Add a silk scarf for more personality and reach for any shoe — pump, loafer or boot! This look works best with a thinner sweater (otherwise it’s too much bulky material!)

Add flair with a silk scarf

How to Accessorize a Sweater with neck scarf

Cashmere Sweater: EverlaneWide-Leg Crops: Everlane, Neck Scarf: Old, similar here and here

No matter the season, I am ALWAYS a fan of a silk scarf. They’re such a fun way to incorporate style or color into any outfit and just make any look more elevated and polished. This is also a great way to dress up sweaters for the office. See how I style my french-style scarves here!

Over a Dress or Midi Skirt with fun earrings

How to Accessorize a Sweater - 15 ways

Sweater: Topshop (Runs TTS, wearing small), Skirt: Halogen (Exact color sold out, but they have 12 other colors/prints!), Booties: Steve MaddenBag: Treasure + Bond (sold out, but similar here!), Earrings: Old, but similar here

I posted this look last month and fully intend on repeating it throughout the fall season. The chunky knit and midi skirt combo is gold! This look transitions so well from day-to-night. I would wear this to a girls brunch or shower during the day and feel just as comfortable wearing it for a night on the town. Pro tip: pair this look with a heel of some sort — bootie or pump. It pulls the look together and avoids any “frumpy” proportions.

Layer With Lace

cropped cardigan

Sweater: Old, (the Everlane Cropped Cardigan is very similar), Leggings: Spanx, Tank: Old, similar here with lots of colors!, Bag: Madewell Transport Zipper Tote

Texture is a huge component in putting together an interesting outfit–and I love how this look plays with unexpected textures — knit, lace and leather! The lace cami adds the perfect amount of spice — I love this for cozy date nights, in or outside of the house!

With feminine pumps

stripe sweater

Sweater: Old, (how good are these Madewell Stripe Sweater colors?! and this Halogen crewneck comes in two stripe colorways! Jeans: Rag + Bone (also love the black version!Cap Toe Heels: Sam Edelman, (limited sizing at Shopbop, but found them fully stocked at Amazon! — they run big, go down 1/2 size! Trench: London Fog (they make the BEST trench coats — Runs a little big!)

While it’s tempting to reach for all of the boots and booties you’ve been patiently waiting to wear, don’t discount pairing sweaters with pumps. I love how sweet and feminine they make a look! Perfect for the office, brunch and dinner with the girls!

With a button-down

button down look - How to Accessorize a Sweater

Cashmere Sweater: old but very similar from Everlane, Pants: Old from Halogen, this Spanxx version and Lyssé pair (ON SALE!) are similar! Button down: Everlane, Shoes: Old from Everlane–sold out (Madewell makes similar in black and dark brown!)

I really love the layered look of a button-down underneath a classic crewneck sweater. I know I’m ALWAYS a pro front-tuck girl, but in this case, I actually really like it tucked out because it adds a lot more interest and makes it more fashion-forward!

With faux leather leggings

everlane cable knit

Sweater: Old (I love this similar one from Topshop and this Everlane cable knit), Leggings: Commando, Boots: Old, Franco Sarto (The Sam Edelman Petty Chelsea boots are very similar though and so comfortable!)

I wasn’t kidding about my obsession with textures! These faux leather leggings and ankle booties instantly elevate a classic sweater look. This is my fall/winter go-to date night formula — it looks put together and it’s beyond comfortable and cozy!

Add a Beret

beret - How to Accessorize a Sweater

It’s obviously no secret that I am a BIG fan of a good beret–and I think it’s JUST the thing to spice up a classic sweater outfit! The one I’m wearing here is old but Nordstrom makes a really cute one in tons of colors! The one I wear most is by far my camel beret–it’s almost beret season and I CANNOT. WAIT. Not sure how to wear it? Head over to my how to wear a beret post!

With a Moto jacket

colorful sweater

Sweater: old but very cute similar colorful striped sweaters here, Jeans: Rag + Bone Jacket:BlankNYC (old so this exact color isn’t available but there are so many cute other colors this year!) Sneakers: Tretorn (run TTS)

One of my most worn accessories all year round? A moto jacket! Whether it’s classic leather or a fun colored suede, try accessorizing your favorite sweater with a moto jacket for a totally new twist!

With a Barbour Jacket and Sneakers

coat - How to Accessorize a Sweater

Coat: Barbour Quilted Beadnell c/o Tuckernuck (More sizes available at Nordstrom!), Sweater: Old, similar style from Topshop and I love this Everlane Cashmere Oversized V-Neck that comes in 3 colors!, Denim: Levi’s 711 skinny jeans (they’re on sale for $39!), Shoes: Jack PurcellBag: Madewell Transport Tote

I love this easy fall look! For coffee runs, errands, fall activities and travel days, for instance, it can’t be beat! A light jacket and sneakers combo keep it from looking too wintry. In addition, these quality, comfortable basics make you look put together throughout the day!

Go For Mono

coat for fall - How to Accessorize a Sweater

Pants: Everlane (Also love these Madewell Emmett crop pants, which come in so many colors!), Ruffle neck sweater: Old, similar look here, Everlane’s Oversized Alpaca Crew comes in cool pink, and I love the slouchy fit of this Free People sweaterBooties: Old, but similar here & I love the Everlane Heel BootCoat: Old, BB Dakota has a similar bomber version and Bardot has a similar stye in soft pink!

While it’s so fun to mix and match colors and patterns for fall, there’s something unexpected about going full on monochromatic with your layers. I love how unexpected this light hue is while still being seasonally appropriate!

With Bold Pop of Accessories

Casual Winter Street Style–Chicago Fashion Blogger, The Golden Girl

Sweater: Old, (similar waffle-knit- comes in 9 colors and this one comes in 7 colors!), Denim: Old Levi’s (similar styles here and here), Scarf: old, (similar here and I love this Barbour version!), Flats: Repetto, bought in Paris, (similar matte version and Todds has a red patent loafer)

Before winter rolls in and socks are a permanent fixture for the foreseeable future, take advantage of pairing sweaters with fun flats and loafers! I love adding a festive pop of color with scarves and shoes this time of year.

Double up cashmere sweater

Cardigan: Everlane, Cashmere Sweater: Everlane, Pants: Everlane, Loafer: Everlane

Sometimes two sweaters is better than one! How cute is this look for the office? Especially ones that run extra cold this time of year. The key here is layering similar, yet complementary hues — bonus points for a monochromatic look! See more ways I styled this cardigan sweater in my Everlane Fall Capsule Wardrobe post.
