Four Classic, Yet Modern Ways To Style a Jean Skirt

Mar 19, 2018

If you follow me on Instagram stories, you’ll remember I did a poll a few weeks back and asked, “are we embracing the return of the jean skirt!?” It was an exact 50-50 spit!

For the half of you who gave the trend a big fat “N-O”–I hear you, really. I understand that the thought of a jean skirt may evoke very strong memories of the ever-popular Abercrombie 3 inch-long-dress-code-infraction skirt from high-school. (Fun fact: the only times I ever got detention in school were due to Abercrombie-induced dress code infractions and being chronically late class. Some things change, some things don’t ?)

Anyway, the OTHER half of you were like, “YES. JEAN SKIRTS! THIS IS SOMETHING I CAN GET BEHIND!”

I happen to fall more into that camp–for good reason, I promise. ? My goal today to convince you skeptics that the jean skirt is about to be your new best friend once more. (Don’t worry, the hemlines have gotten longer since our glory days ?)

Without further adieu, let’s jump in–where I show you four very different yet very tasteful ways to wear a jean skirt, no matter what your style!

how to style a denim skirt four ways

First thing’s first, let’s talk about the Number Uno of today’s post: the denim skirt

I had been browsing around for different denim skirts for a few days, looking for one that wasn’t distressed (I like a bit of raw hem because I think it contrasts nicely with classic, girly, and modern pieces which make up the bulk of my wardrobe) but I didn’t want it ripped or anything. (You know me–not exactly “miss edgy” up in here.) I also love the PRICE on this guy–$49!! That’s pretty tough to beat, don’t you think!?

Sizing: As with all Topshop, this skirt does run small. For example, you order a 2 in Topshop, it’s going to be a 0 in most other sizes. (Which is what I ordered, but honestly I probably couldn’t gone another size up!)

Other similar styles: this skirt also comes in black denim! This other Topshop version is almost identical–the only difference is the front seam! A.Golde also makes one (and they’re famous for their cult-classic high-waisted jean shorts, so I’m sure their skirt is also amazing!) Shopbop also sells a bunch of cute denim skirts!

#1: Playful and Feminine with a peplum top and espadrilles:

Peplum blouse: Topshop (also comes in lot’s of other colors here, I’ve been dying for this green! Runs small!), Skirt: Topshop (runs small–make sure to size up!) and also comes in black denim! This other Topshop version is almost identical–the only difference is the front seam! A.Golde also makes one (and they’re famous for their cult-classic high-waisted jean shorts, so I’m sure their skirt is also amazing!) Shopbop also sells a bunch of cute denim skirtsEspadrilles: Soludos via Shopbop (also available at Nordstrom) Shop more espadrilles hereStraw bag: vintage, but this tote is super cute and similar and only $99! (It’s also packable–so nice for vacation! I think I need for Italy!) OMG also, this designer dupe circular straw bag is $49 from B.P.!! I need this ASAP! I also love the mod version of this round woven version with the white leather–it’s also under $100! Shopbop has a TON of adorable straw bags as well!

When I saw this adorable polka dot peplum blouse, I knew it had to be mine! It’s playful, feminine, dainty, girly, and super-duper flattering, all in one! I can’t wait to wear it all through spring and summer!

You know how I always talk about my “juxtaposition rule” that I use when getting dressed? That’s what makes this look work so well–the raw hem of the skirt adds just a tiny bit of edge, and makes it a bit more casual–which contrasts really nicely with the feminine details of the blouse! To strike the right dressy/casual balance, I added an espadrille wedge–which I absolutely LOVE. These are made by Soludos, and they’re super comfy–I also love that they’re close-toed, which means you can start wearing them now even if it’s still a little chilly out!

Easy Weekend Wear: With a striped tee, sneakers, and leather jacket:

Striped tee: J.Crew’s “Perfect Tee”–also comes in navy/white stripe version as well as lot’s of solid colorsSkirt: Topshop (runs small–make sure to size up!) and also comes in black denim! This other Topshop version is almost identical–the only difference is the front seam! A.Golde also makes one (and they’re famous for their cult-classic high-waisted jean shorts, so I’m sure their skirt is also amazing!) Leather Jacket: From Italy (I got it while studying abroad in college) but this one, this one, and this one are all similar and amazing prices! Sneakers: Jack Purcell – thinking about getting some White Converse sneakers too! (Going to order on Shopbop b/c of the super fast shipping! Shop Converse here!)

It’s hard to pick a favorite look out of all of these outfits, but this one might be my favorite. It almost reminds me a little bit of “Now and Then”–don’t you think? All that’s missing is my beach cruiser ?

I have this tee in other colors and honestly when I saw it online I didn’t think much of it, but then I happened to see it in person and had to have it! I’m not usually one drawn to whimsical colors and patterns like this, but it’s just so fun! (Without being too over the top!) I think crisp, white sneakers always add the most classic touch to any outfit.

Effortless French Girl with a red + blue button down + red heels:

Button down: Available at Nordstrom and J.Crew Leather Jacket: From Italy (I got it while studying abroad in college) but this one, this one, and this one are all similar and amazing prices! Shoes: Everlane Day Heels (run small, size up!) Bag: Madewell Transport Tote Skirt: Topshop (runs small–make sure to size up!) and also comes in black denim! This other Topshop version is almost identical–the only difference is the front seam! A.Golde also makes one (and they’re famous for their cult-classic high-waisted jean shorts, so I’m sure their skirt is also amazing!)

Can we talk about this button down!?

I mean, really. Could it be any more perfect? I think it was made for me. A little french girl, a little classic prep. If you’re worried about a jean skirt not looking polished enough, this is a great way to style it–a collared button down goes a long way in classing any item up, and these shoes are the perfect height to pair with it as well! They’re not too high, and they’re insanely comfortable!

Go minimalist with a silk shirt and loafers:

Loafers: Gucci Brixton Loafers (Sam Edelman Lior Loafers are a great budget-friendly dupe and come in tons of colors. I have them in leopard and they are so comfy and run TTS! Sam Edelman is one of my #1 favorite shoe brands, so whenever I look for new shoes, I check Sam Edelman first! You can shop more Sam Edelman right here!) Shirt: Everlane (there’s a whole FAQ post on it right over here!) Skirt: Topshop (runs small–make sure to size up!) and also comes in black denim!

This outfit is for all my minimalist girls out there! I don’t think this is the typical style that comes to mind when you think “jean skirt” – so I wanted to prove to you guys that this really can work for any kind of style and so many different occasions! (Did I succeed!?) Sometimes, black and white makes the best combination! Plus, this is an ideal way to style your jean skirt right now, with all this crazy in-between weather we’ve been having! (Closed toed shoes + long sleeves FTW!)
