Capsule Wardrobe Remix: Ponte Pants Four Ways

Jan 16, 2018

So, you’ve been looking for a pair of pants that you can wear to work and on the weekends? To a board meeting or on an airplane? With heels or with sneakers? Conservative enough for church but sexy enough for a night out?

(It’s like we have ESPN or something…)

These magic pants exist. They’re called ponte pants. If you don’t know, now you know.

I figured they were the best way to break the extremely long accidental hiatus I took from the Capsule Wardrobe Remix series over the holidays. (SORRY! I swear I blinked in November and it became January!) But I’m excited to say, IT’S BACK! (Make sure you see the full list of items in my Winter Capsule wardrobe in this post!)

Anyway, I also heard you loud and clear on your request for more office-appropriate outfits, so, no matter what the dress code is at your 9-5, I can assure you, you’ll be reaching for these pants several times over throughout the work-week, as well as outside of work, too!

The pair I’m styling here is made by Halogen, which is one of my favorite brands for basic wardrobe staples–they also come in charcoal grey, which would be great for work as well. Nordstrom has a huge selection of ponte pants, too. If you’re wanting ones that are less tapered (i.e. look more like work slacks) Madewell makes a version that you may like!

Read on for four ways to style ’em!

Simple Business Casual:

Are you sick of my silk Everlane button down yet? ? Hopefully not, because this won’t be the last time you see it! It’s probably my #1 most worn item of my entire wardrobe, and for good reason. It really is one of the most versatile things you can own. It’s a match made in heaven for ponte pants and some chic black pumps. To mix things up, I unbuttoned a few buttons from the bottom of the shirt and tied it up, which is a new alternative to the front tuck, which defines your waist and elongates your legs! (Shirt sizing tip: Runs TTS but is supposed to be a relaxed fit. If you want it tighter you can go a size down! I’m wearing a size 2 here.)

Dinner and a Movie:

I always find myself constantly rushing, so if you’re the same, this is another reason you’ll love these pants. Anything that minimizes rushing is a win in my book. These pants essentially eliminate the need to go home and change for your movie date after work. Just bring another top and a change of shoes and do the desk-side switcheroo. Told you–these pants go with everything! Here I paired them with my favorite tall boots (they have a low, chunky heel, which is great because I think the heel makes them easier to dress up, but still really comfortable! Run TTS!) and a classic black turtleneck. (Mine is old but this one is very similar and a great price–reviews say to size down! Everlane also makes a really pretty one!) Also, my black Barbour Beadnell!

French Girl Chic:

When I put on this outfit, Cassandra stopped mid-sentence and stared at me for a good 5 seconds before blurting out, “oh my god, that is the cutest outfit I have ever seen.” Some of the best outfits catch you by surprise–but almost all of them have one thing in common–they’re simple, but significant–to steal the words of Don Draper. I think that’s going to be my motto when getting dressed this year.

What you didn’t notice at first, is that the foundation of this outfit is actually outfit #1: ponte pants, my silk button down (untied) with my favorite camel crewneck layered over it. (My sweater is old, but similar here, here, and here!) I paired it with my favorite oxfords (which I also love in black!), but this look would also be really cute with loafers. (Neal got me the Gucci loafers for Christmas and they are UNREAL and so comfortable, but I also own the Sam Edelman ones (I have the leopard but they come in tons of colors and are also amazing and super comfy!)

Weekend Casual:

Alright, I broke the technical capsule rules here because I subbed out the striped turtleneck from the original list for this striped tee. #1, because I can’t find a dupe of the white striped turtleneck with black stripes anywhere anymore, and #2–you REALLY, REALLY need to know about this tee. It’s REVERSIBLE! One side is boatneck, the other is v-neck. How amazing is that? (Awesome for travel, too! It’s basically 2 shirts in one!) Plus, it’s insanely soft.

I feel like this might be one of the first outfits to come to mind when you hear the phrase, “Jess Keys outfit.” It’s got all my favorite staples: stripes, neck scarf, Barbour jacket, tall boots. I really like the juxtaposition of the feminine details of the shirt and scarf paired with the more masculine Barbour coat–contrasts like this always make for the most foolproof outfits.
