Capsule Wardrobe Remix: One Black Dress, Four Ways, From Work to the Weekend

Oct 20, 2017

Happy Friday!

We’re back with another Capsule Wardrobe Remix post–hooray!

I’m really excited about today’s post! Not only is this t-shirt dress one of my very favorite wardrobe staples, but I think the concept here can really revolutionize how you look at your wardrobe–this will also come in especially handy when it comes to packing for a trip!

(Side note: If you haven’t read this post, go do that first, then come back here and read this! I want to make sure you’re all caught up to speed on our new series!)

Today’s concept: One dress, four ways, from work to weekend.

So, you know the drill! Before we get into the looks, let’s go through the handful of items we need to create these looks:

Black t-shirt dress: I kind of think this was the unsung hero of this month’s capsule–you’ll see why, but I am in LOVE with this black t-shirt dress.  I wear it ev-er-y-where. It’s great on the plane, out to dinner, to the office, on a date–later on, I even show you a sneaky hidden belt trick to make it shorter when you want to go out on the town ? There’s also a similar one at H&MThis one and this one are also good ones!

Heeled Booties: These booties by 1.State go with everything I own, they are SO comfy, and are only $99! I love the shape of the toe and the fact that they’re cut out in the back too, which adds a little more visual interest! Because of the shape and color, they also help to elongate your leg, which is hard to find in a bootie, as most of the time they can cut you off at the ankles and make your legs look stubby! (You also saw them worn in my outfit post earlier this week!) I also just got these booties from Bloomingdales that I’m obsessed with if you’re looking for a more classic style.

Leather tote: The Madewell Transport tote making the capsule wardrobe cut comes as a shock to absolutely none of you, I am sure. It’s my everything bag. Work, travel, groceries–whatever, this is always the bag I’m reaching for and it comes in several styles and colors as well.

Black pumps: I’ve owned this particular pair of Sam Edelman pumps for years. They’re slingbacks, and they’ve since been discontinued, but this pair is super similar in the d’Orsay styleThis ankle strap version is adorable, too! I love Sam Edelman shoes (Nordstrom has a good selection and Shopbop’s selection is also diverse and totally different) They’re one of my go-to brands for footwear.

Black OTK boots: I own two pairs of black OTK boots. In this month’s series, I’ll be styling the Stuart Weitzman Lowlands, but I always refer people to the Blondo Olivia’s, which I also own and love, if they want something more budget-friendly. The Blondo version are waterproof, which is AMAZING in the winter. You never have to worry about saving your precious suede boots from the weather, and they are stretchy in the back, which means they are the only budget-friendly pair I’ve found that fit my tiny child calves, but also stretch to fit all calf sizes, too!

Trench coat: I purchased this trench by London Fog last Spring before my trip to London and it is one of my very favorite coats for both Fall and Spring. It has a detachable hood as well as a removable liner. Which unlike a lot of coats, does add a significant amount of warmth. I absolutely adore it and it’s one of my favorite jackets. It looks super chic for work, and just as pretty for dinner or a stroll around the neighborhood.

Leather jacket: I now own two leather jackets–one brown and one black. The black one is my newest addition and I don’t know what took me so long to get one! I definitely love both colors and I think whichever color is best for you just depends on your preferences. The one I feature this month is sadly sold out but this one from Bernardo is similar. Bernardo makes a ton of really quality leather jackets that always get rave reviews. This one from BlankNYC is also super cute and under $100! (I’ll also be linking more options down below).

Leopard clutch: For the same reasons as I sing the praises of the leopard loafer, I love this leopard clutch. (Nordstrom actually has a TON of different leopard clutches right now!) I’m a huge fan of it for going out because it brightens up even the most basic outfit. Plus, it’s such a steal for less than $50 and it looks and feels like the designer version.

Crossbody: I was so on the fence when I purchased this crossbody (it’s Rebecca Minkoff’s ‘Love’ bag in size small!) as to whether or not I would wear it, but I’d have to say it’ snow become one of my most reached for bags. I really love the fact that it’s olive, which is a neutral, but a really fun mix-up from the typical tan or grey. Although my exact version in the olive color is no longer available in the smaller size, this one is nearly identical, just slightly larger! I also like the Mini “Mac” bag in olive suede as well!

Neck scarf: Another one that won’t shock you a bit ? I’m a huge fan of the dainty neck scarf (I love this one from J.Crew!) and I think it’s the perfect accessory to add a little French inspiration to your outfit. I own over a dozen! eBay is a great place to get vintage ones, too!

Belts: My gold buckle belt is Topshop and has since sold out (boo!) but this one is really similar and so is this one! I also have a cool trick I’ll show you later on in the post that requires a skinny belt (I have a skinny leopard belt like this one that’s really cute, but any skinny belt will do–it won’t be visible!)

Ready to do it? Let’s go!

Friday Client Meeting: Business casual look For Fall

The true test of any wardrobe staple–does it pass the “office” test? This black t-shirt dress definitely does. Now, of course, everyone’s office dress code is different, so feel free to improvise as you need, but for the most part, I think this number would be deemed appropriate in most work settings! (Not to mention, it’s so soft, it feels like pajamas.)

Many t-shirt dresses don’t have much shape to them, so it’s most flattering if you use a belt (mine is old, this one is similar) to emphasize your waist! Pair with classic black pumps and your office tote, throw on your trench, and you’re ready to go.

Also worth noting–you can never go wrong with top knot. Your boss thinks it looks polished–only you know that it’s disguising your two day old mop. (This is how I do my top knot!)

Friday Night Dinner:

Alright. Well, this was easy. Swap the pumps for booties, your work bag for a cute leopard clutch (I love this one, too!), and swipe on some deep red lipstick (I’ve been loving Lilah B.’s dual purpose lip & cheek color in “B.Memorable” that I’m wearing here!) and you’re good to go!

I wear this look out on Friday night when Neal and I are roaming around the neighborhood! These booties are the perfect “going out” height for when you’ll be doing a fair amount of walking and need something comfortable, but want something that looks cute too! (For those who are interested, this is how I curl my hair!)

Saturday Coffee Date:

French girl scarf

You guys KNOW I was secretly supposed to be born a French girl, so I’m all about the neck scarf. I think it’s one of the easiest ways to take your look from boring to super chic. If you’re unsure which colors to get, don’t overthink it! I’d recommend going with a dark navy, white, and red mix because those colors pair well with everything. The colors in the scarf you see here are navy–often when you wear navy with black, the navy either looks black, or provides a nice contrast. I’m very into mixing black and navy!

Anyway, for this look, I also came up with a sneaky little belt trick for when you want to shorten your hemline in a snap: belt a skinny belt around your dress, and then pull it out so the fabric falls over the belt. It defines your waist, shortens the dress, and you can barely tell the belt is there to begin with! (See the demo in the video at the top of this post!) This is definitely how you can get the most wear out of your casual dresses from the office to date night.

I opted for a crossbody because it’s perfect for both day and night and still roomy enough to fit all of your essentials! The olive color ensures it’s a neutral that goes with absolutely everything, and the suede material adds a little something extra to your outfit!

Remember that skinny belt trick I showed you to shorten your dress? You also see that here! There are few style combinations I love more than a short dress with OTK boots–it makes your legs look miles long! (Here I’m wearing the Stuart Weitzman Lowlands, but I always refer people to the Blondo Olivia’s, which I also own and love, if they want something more budget-friendly. They’re also waterproof AND on sale right now!!)

To top off the look, pull on a leather jacket (this one is similar to mine and on sale!), grab that fun patterned clutch, and you’ve got the perfect outfit for Saturday night!
